YVONNE R.

Yvonne started private piano lessons at the age of 6 and competed in local festivals in both piano and voice in solo and ensemble categories, receiving numerous awards. She completed piano studies under Hiroko Sheppard (nee Kojima) at College Heights, Lacome Alberta, receiving Toronto Conservatory of Grade 9 Music certification in piano performance and associated theory classes.

After studying and working for several years in surveying and urban planning she returned to the music field and began teaching Kindergarten music at a local elementary school, developing the curriculum for the program. That grew into private piano and voice instruction before joining the Music Place in 2005. As a Music Place teacher she teaches private piano and voice lessons, EMA, and has taught in elementary classroom settings, along with leading and developing curriculum for MP summer camps.

Yvonne believes that studying music should be more than just learning to play an instrument. Lessons should be fun, engaging, and holistic. This involves understanding how the instrument works, mastering age appropriate technique, learning the theory behind the music being performed, and working on a variety of music to provide challenge and stimulation. Lessons also include ear and rhythm training in order to develop the whole musician and grow the student's ability to learn new material on their own, which gives the student great pride and satisfaction.

Yvonne is married with a great husband & three terrific kids.
