Alishan M.

Alishan is a fun but very detail-oriented teacher. His philosophy of music education (similar to the Suzuki philosophy) is that, just as we are all comfortable speaking our native language before we learn to read and write, music students ought to be comfortable with hearing and speaking the language of music before they are forced to read extensively. He wants his students to learn to hear and imitate, as well as improvise musical “sentences” on their own. This includes a special emphasis on proper technical development on the instrument(s), because comfort and ease is essential to enjoyment. However, once technical and musical fluency is achieved, Alishan believes that there is no skill more satisfying than fluent reading, as it gives us ready access to great masterworks of music that we can play together. Therefore a step-by-step development of reading skills must be emphasized from the beginning through many reading exercises.

Above all, Alishan’s goal for his students is to inspire them to actualize their God-given potentials. He wants each student to know that they are unique and specially loved just as they are. He wants to help them to learn to enjoy the process of practicing and improving their skills, and to explore and enjoy the possibilities of learning and life.

Alishan has been teaching at the Music Place since 2008. He is currently finishing up his upper division requirements to complete a double-major degree in Piano Performance and Music Education, with a minor in Viola Performance, at San Jose State University. He teaches piano, violin and viola.
